Statement Following EU Referendum

Plumstead Manor is an inclusive and caring community which celebrates the rich tapestry of people who make up our school.  We welcome people from a wide range of different cultures and backgrounds, and over 60 languages are spoken in our school.  We are proud of this diversity which reflects our local community and wider society  in the UK.  We have high expectations of all our young people, academically, socially and personally, and offer the chance to students of all backgrounds to experience educational excellence and to better themselves.

 Schools should be model communities, not only reflecting the beliefs of wider society, but nurturing and cementing the founding values that it holds dear.   As a school, as part of the fabric of the local community, we want to be clear to our students, their parents and carers that we are a vibrant, tolerant, open and diverse community which celebrates difference, and does not fear others.  We value kindness, confidence of mind, independence of thought, and positivity in our approach to others so that our young people go on to change the world for the better.  In our community there is certainly more that unites us, than divides us.

As such we will not tolerate prejudice or discrimination of any kind, whether expressed in the spoken or written word, in action or in deed.  We will respond swiftly and robustly whenever we uncover this.   It is also important in light of the recent EU referendum result that we assure all our families, that there is no current change to the immigration status of EU residents and their children at this point in time.  With at least a two-year negotiation period, with the UK remaining an EU member for the intervening period, it is likely there will be no change to this in 2017 and 2018.

We will continue to fight as a force for good in our local community, and will provide an update about any policy or status changes that occur in light of the EU referendum as they emerge in the coming months and years.
