Y9 Scholars’ Programme Launch

Plumstead Manor School Y9 Scholars’ Programme LaunchOn the 6th of March 2017 12 Year 9s made their way to the School of Oriental and Asian Studies (SOAS) for the launch of the Brilliant Club’s Y9 Scholars Programme. Our students had already met their tutor, Ruth Macdonald, who has completed a PhD in Classics, and so used the opportunity to have their second tutorial in a Russell Group university.

Over this half-term the Y9 students have tackled the task ‘With reference to one or more examples, consider to what extent Classical Receptions reflect the literary, artistic and/or socio-political concerns of the modern era.’ They are considering questions such as, why does Greek and Roman literature and culture continue to captivate us today?  Where do the Classics fit in relation to contemporary culture broadly understood?  And what is the significance of ancient myth, literature and art for writers, artists and film-makers in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries?

The Y9s greatly enjoyed their trip to SOAS, and are relishing the opportunity to stretch and challenge themselves through the tutorials they are receiving. They will be writing a 2000 word response to the task, and will be attending a graduation ceremony at the University of Cambridge in May.
