EMI Music Sound Foundation Grant 2018

of £11,000 to Plumstead Manor

Plumstead Manor School are delighted to announce that the school has been granted an £11,000 donation for music education by the EMI Music Sound Foundation in celebration of the charity’s 20th anniversary. The funding for 2018 includes the charity’s annual grant to the school, of £6,000, with a further £5,000 donation made in honour of the Foundation’s landmark anniversary.

The expanded donation of £11,000 will allow the school to further develop their relationship and reputation within the wider community, and carry out workshops and performances within many of the local primary schools. We will also be able to develop the opportunities we are able to offer our students thanks to this donation.

Plumstead Manor School has been part of the EMI Music Sound Foundation’s network of supported schools since 2000 when the charity supported our specialist school’s bid to become a Music School with a grant of £40,000. Since then, Plumstead Manor’s reputation for music has grown, and the students have been involved in various performances in some of London’s most famous venues: the Royal Albert Hall; Royal Festival Hall; the Barbican; the O2; The Scoop Theatre at City Hall, and the BT Tower, among others.

For the last ten years, the Foundation has donated £6,000 to each of its supported schools and, at Plumstead Manor School, it is invested by the music department across the following areas: instruments for use in lessons and performances; specialist teaching staff (allowing for practical teaching, performance and learning opportunities, music clubs and workshops), and resources which have allowed the department to grow and teach a wider curriculum. The funding has afforded us the opportunity to be a practical and proactive department, offering students a wide range of skills and experiences which promote music as a cultural and fun art form, whether students are interested in a future in music or just learning for enjoyment. In the future, we hope to continue expanding our department and helping students of all backgrounds enjoy and engage with music. We would also like to continue our involvement in the community to share Plumstead Manor’s love of music with a broader audience.

While music education continues to be a postcode lottery for some children, we will work with our partners and the government to ensure that music is a skill that everyone gets the opportunity to learn.

Mrs Sonia Linaker, Head of Music comments:

Music plays a huge role at Plumstead Manor, and we are grateful to have the backing of EMI Music Sound Foundation supporting music within our school. The opportunities we have been able to offer students and the expertise of our music teachers really make Plumstead Manor stand out as a school that embraces music and emphasises the importance of music education and appreciation.

Adam Barker, Chair of Trustees, EMI Music Sound Foundation added:

We are proud to work with Plumstead Manor School. It is brilliant to see how the school supports and continues to inspire their music students and teachers. Since our inception in 1997, the EMI Music Sound Foundation has donated over £8 million in grants helping to ensure that the benefit and joy of studying music stays available to more students across the United Kingdom.
