Big Idea Semi-Finalists

Solutions for the PlanetIn February Year 9s participated in an introductory programme, The Big Idea sponsored by Solutions for the Planet; a social enterprise partnering with schools and business to promote education for sustainable development. From this, students Nurhaliza Thapa, Benita Angorit and Siya Ramtri formed a team to enter into the Big Ideas Day Competition in April.

The team were invited to the regional semi-finals of the Big Ideas competition on the 23rd of May in the University of Greenwich.

The girls did an amazing job during the regional semi-finals of the Solutions for the Planet competition. They presented their idea to a panel of judges formed by key sponsors of the event from different companies as well as the rest of the schools and teachers presenting on the day. During the five minutes that their presentation lasted they showed their passion for the issues faced by slums and their clear idea to create an app to raise awareness of the problem and encourage people to donate. The judges praised them for their detailed research on their topic and the effective answering of complicated questions on their project. The presentations were followed by the guided visit of the venue, the University of Greenwich, with the chance to ask questions to a current student and learn about the history of the university.

Unfortunately, the girls have not made it to the finals of the competition and they will be receiving feedback over the next two weeks about their Big Idea. We hope they continue with their project after taking up any advice that has been offered and have a chance to make their idea a reality.
