Profile of the Department
Our Maths department has 13 well-qualified and enthusiastic members of staff, and we pride ourselves in teaching to the highest standard and achieving fantastic results. The department has access to a wealth of data; this is central to the planning and delivery of lessons to all students. The data is used to provide support and guidance to all students in order to allow them to become independent learners and build their confidence and motivations for the subject.
As part of our KS2 to KS3 transition, we have links with the local primary schools and also offer a Saturday programme for the more able and talented students (MAT). This is targeted towards Y5 and Y6 pupils and allows them to gain an insight into what to expect at secondary school.
When students arrive at Plumstead Manor School, they are grouped in sets based on their KS2 results. This allows them to learn at their own pace whilst still being challenged. This gives students the opportunity to move between sets depending on their personal performance.
Year on year, the overall performance of our students has improved. This year, 78% of students achieved level 5 and above, with 57% achieving level 6 and above.
During years 9-11, students follow the GCSE Edexcel linear specification 1380. Selected students take their GCSE in November of Year 11 with remaining students taking the exam in June. PMS has continued to exceed the national average for girls every year; last year we achieved our best ever results; 71% A*-C.
The more able students also have the chance to take a GCSE in Statistics following the Edexcel specification in Year 10, completed within the year. The strength of our more-able students has continued the trend of 100% A*-C in GSCE Statistics, with 95% of these students achieving A*-B.
We offer the following modules at KS5:
- C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, S2 for AS/A2 Mathematics
- FP1, FP2, M1, D1, D2, S3 for AS/A2 Further Mathematics
Our exceptional results at A2 Mathematics have continued to exceed the national average (95% A*-C in 2012). Our A2 Further Mathematics results have improved over the years; last year we achieved a 100% pass rate of A-C.
